Community Involvement

"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children."

~Native American Proverb

The team at Greenstar has a strong desire to positively impact mother earth and our community. Promoting goodwill and raising awareness to the diverse needs of others are at the core of our beliefs and values. Greenstar hopes that through public awareness, we will inspire others to find out more about these worthy causes and explore more ways to help.

Green Team
We don't just talk the talk. Composed of a group of Greenstar volunteers, the Green Team looks for ways to make our company and surrounding community greener by developing and implementing strategies to reduce our negative environmental impact at work and at home. Here are a few of our newest initiatives:

  • We will be setting up a vegetable garden this spring at the back of our parking lot and the bounty of organic vegetables will be donated to the local food bank. An on-site compost bin will provide vital compost for the garden and reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill.
  • To further reduce our waste, on-site recycle bins will be set up to collect cans, bottles and electronics. As there is no recycling pick-up in Langley's industrial areas, a member of the team will take these bins to a recycling depot.
  • Paper is picked up every other week by Urban Impact Recycling. In 2007 this effort kept 115 cubic yards or 57 full sized pick-up trucks of paper from entering the landfill and saved 19 tonnes of carbon emissions.
Through education we can all learn about environmental issues and make changes to our lifestyle that collectively can have a significant impact. Protecting the environment is no small task. There are so many factors to consider when trying to live a greener life, that some may become overwhelmed at such a seemingly daunting task. The thing to remember is that every small step is a smart step in the right direction to environmental harmony.

Green Team Mission Statement:
To take an active role in the promotion of environmental responsibility and awareness within our company and our surrounding community by making environmentally sound choices to reduce our environmental footprint, and by participating in local environmental initiatives.

Burns Bog
For every bag of CocoEarth sold, Greenstar donates $0.15 to the Burns Bog Conservation Society. The Society was founded in 1988 and has successfully stopped major development of the area and brought awareness globally to the importance of this sensitive area.

Burns Bog is a raised peat bog in Delta, BC and is the largest undeveloped landmass in North America. It is also the only known raised peat bog in a Mediterranean climate. Mining of peat moss is damaging environmentally sensitive areas that take thousands of years to create. Nature has worked long and hard to give us a natural water and air filtration system and we are endangering it. In addition to being a natural filtering system, Burns Bog is also home to many rare and endangered species of animals and fauna that can only grow in this type of environment.

Coco Coir is a sustainable resource and a by-product of the coconut industry. Coco is an environmentally friendly product to replace peat moss and is endorsed by the Burns Bog Society.

Greenstar Cares and Shares
Greenstar has an enthusiastic and creative social committee that keeps everyone involved throughout the year in various fundraising functions. The activities are all voluntary and the funds raised are matched by Greenstar. We have cake decorating contests & raffles, jeans days, hot dog & sundae lunches, bingo, 50/50 and even Survivor. These activities not only raise funds but serve to help promote team building and bond the diverse Greenstar team together. Recipients include:

  • Adopt a Family
Every Christmas we adopt a Langley family. Once we have information on the family, Greenstar volunteers have the fun of shopping for presents and food. There is a wrapping party in the boardroom and marketing even creates custom gift tags for the packages. This also serves to bond our team by working toward a common goal to help others. To learn how you can adopt a Langley family go to their website.
Additional monies were also donated to the Christmas bureau to purchase toys, gift certificates and food hampers for other families.
The Langley Christmas Bureau is set up by the City of Langley every October and is comprised of about 200 volunteers dedicated to helping make the holidays a special time for everyone.

  • Basics for BabiesĀ®
In 2007, Greenstar donated $1,000 plus a wheelbarrow full of baby needs such as formula and diapers in support of 93.7JRfm's campaign: Basic for Babies. There is a continuous shortage of diapers, formula and baby food at local food banks. 93.7 JRfm, and sister station 600AM, created the charity in 1994 to fill this need. The campaign for 2008 raised $216,000 and more than 16,000 pounds of baby items.

  • More Toys
Greenstar lent a helping hand to the 94.5FM The Beat Care's Holiday Toy and Food Drive, a campaign that raised more than 22,000 lbs of food for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and more than 25,000 toys and computers and $15,000 in clothing for the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau and Salvation Army plus $88,000 in cash donations.
